The Brush Lady Arcs continued their dominant season with a 64-35 victory over the Madison Blue Streaks in the OHSAA Girls Basketball District Final at Perry High School on Saturday. The win improves Brush's record to 22-2 and extends their impressive win streak to 20 games, setting them up for a regional matchup against CVCA on Thursday, Feb. 27.
The game started slow, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm offensively. However, Brush soon found its offensive firepower, using an explosive second half to break open the contest. Despite a subpar shooting performance—only 34% from the field, 15% from beyond the arc, and 65% from the free throw line—the Lady Arcs' defense and relentless rebounding proved too much for Madison.
Tati Mason played a standout all-around game, finishing with 25 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, and 6 steals. Mason's performance was key in Brush's ability to dominate the glass and limit Madison's opportunities. She was supported by
Chaniyra McDowell-Isaacs, who contributed 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals, and
Nyla Mason, who added 10 points and 3 boards.
Although Brush struggled to hit shots, they made up for it by dominating the boards. Pivot player Jakayln Brown was held to just 4 points, but she grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, giving the Lady Arcs multiple second-chance opportunities. That effort was critical, as Brush amassed a 50-33 rebounding advantage over Madison.
Madison (19-5) kept it close early in the game, thanks to strong performances from Zoey Deliganis and Leah Brock, who each scored 13 points. However, the Blue Streaks couldn't keep pace with Brush's depth, speed, and defensive pressure. Madison shot just 23% from the field and 11% from three-point range, and while they connected on 11 of their 14 free throws (79%), it wasn't enough to overcome Brush's defensive intensity.
One of the most telling statistics of the game was the turnover battle. Madison committed 24 turnovers, while Brush only gave up 12. The Lady Arcs' swarming defense, which included a 16-4 advantage in steals, resulted in numerous fast-break opportunities, with Brush scoring 22 transition points compared to just 2 for Madison.
Brush's strength in the paint was another critical factor, as they scored 36 of their 64 points in the key, outmuscling Madison, who recorded just 10 points inside. This inside dominance, combined with their defensive prowess, made it clear that Brush was the superior team on this day.
With the victory, Brush advances to the Canton Division III regional, where they will face CVCA at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27. A win in that game would send the Lady Arcs to a regional final against the winner of the Akron Hoban (22-2) vs. Medina Highland (25-0) contest, scheduled for 6 p.m. the same evening. The Lady Arcs' journey continues, and they are now just a few games away from a potential state championship.
