It was a "Shawt-down" at the home of the Redbirds in East Cleveland on Tuesday night. As in, the Arc Soccer squads, both ladies and men, shut down their opponents in both games of a doubleheader last night - allowing just 1 goal in 160 minutes of play - while lighting up the scoreboard for 9 of their own (girls tallied 5; the boys had 4). The Brush soccer programs made it a clean sweep against the Shaw Cardinals, with the Lady Arcs blanking Shaw 5-0 in the opening match before the Brush boys followed with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.
The Brush girls entered Tuesday's match riding a two-game winning streak in which they had outscored their opponents by an impressive 16-0 margin — and they showed no signs of slowing down. The Lady Arcs scored five times and once again kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard, cruising to a 5-0 victory and extending their winning streak to three games.
Brianna Reed got Brush on the board first, finding the net off an assist from Liz Cifuentes. Then came another spectacular offensive performance from
Salena Betts, who recorded yet another hat trick, scoring three goals to lead the Lady Arcs attack. Betts' three-goal performance pushes her season totals to an impressive 20 goals and four assists for 44 points.
Her three goals were set up by a trio of Brush assists, with
Reagan Shelby,
Emmie Farren and
Nyla Ross each providing an assist.
Giselle Johnson capped the Brush scoring, finding the net on an assist from
Kynnadi Hammett to give the Lady Arcs their five-goal advantage.
And that was more than enough. Neither team scored in the second half as Brush's defense once again slammed the door on the Cardinals. The shutout marked the third consecutive match in which the Lady Arcs have not allowed a goal. The victory improves Brush to 6-2 on the season and continues an impressive stretch for the Lady Arcs, who have now outscored their opponents 21-0 over their last three matches.
The Brush boys made sure the second half of Tuesday's doubleheader was just as successful.
After watching the Lady Arcs shut out Shaw, the Brush boys followed with a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals, making it a soccer sweep for the Arcs.
Brush jumped on Shaw early and took a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime, putting the Cardinals in a difficult position heading into the second half. The Arcs received goals from
Prajit Tamang (his 2nd), Ben Denk &
Brenden Bryant (both registering their 1st of the season) and captain
Nathan Underwood (his team-leading 5th), with four different Brush players finding the back of the net in the convincing victory. Another highlight came in goal, where
Marsellus Kappenhagen came up with a huge penalty-kick save, helping preserve Brush's advantage and providing another key moment in an impressive team performance.
Brush added another goal after the break to finish off the 4-1 victory, giving the Arcs back-to-back wins and raising their season record to 2-7.
The offensive turnaround has been noticeable over those two victories, with Brush scoring seven goals in its last two matches.
For Shaw, the loss dropped the Cardinals to 0-3 on the season and extended their losing streak to 14 consecutive matches dating back to last season.
It was a memorable night for Brush soccer — two teams, two victories, nine total goals and a pair of Cardinals caged at SHAW STADIUM.
