For every high school track and field athlete, qualifying for the Ohio High School State Championships represents the culmination of countless hours of practice, sacrifice, determination, and perseverance. This past weekend at historic Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, Brush High School was proudly represented by two outstanding student-athletes as senior Brielle Ray and sophomore Destiny Johnson competed among the very best athletes in the state, and Brush ladies Head Coach Dale Swinerton and Assistant Jeff Adick
While neither athlete returned home with a state championship medal, their accomplishments should not be measured solely by where they finished on the leaderboard. Simply earning a place at the State Championships is an achievement attained by very few student-athletes, and both young women represented the Brush Arcs with pride, determination, and class.
Destiny Johnson enjoyed an outstanding weekend competing in two events against Ohio's elite. In the Girls High Jump Finals, the talented sophomore cleared 5-feet, 0-inches, earning a tie for 9th place in the entire state. Johnson found herself competing alongside many of Ohio's premier jumpers and demonstrated the poise and competitive spirit that have become trademarks of her young career.

Johnson also qualified for the Girls 100-Meter Hurdles, one of the state's most competitive events. Facing a field loaded with experienced upperclassmen, she clocked a time of 15.75 seconds in the preliminary round, placing 16th overall. Although she narrowly missed advancing to the finals, qualifying for the state meet in two separate events is a remarkable accomplishment and speaks volumes about her versatility and athletic ability.
Meanwhile, senior Brielle Ray closed out a tremendous high school career by competing in the Girls Shot Put Finals. Ray recorded a throw of 35 feet, 7¼ inches, placing 17th in Ohio. The state field featured some of the finest throwers from every corner of the Buckeye State, and Ray earned her place among them through hard work, dedication, and consistency throughout the season.

For Ray, the trip to Columbus served as a fitting conclusion to a memorable career in a Brush uniform. Her leadership, commitment, and competitive spirit helped pave the way for future generations of Arc track and field athletes.
While championships garner the headlines, the true story lies in the journey. Destiny Johnson and Brielle Ray reached a level that thousands of Ohio athletes dream about but never attain. They stood on the starting line and in the competition circle among the state's best, representing their school, teammates, coaches, families, and community with tremendous pride.
The entire Brush family congratulates Destiny and Brielle on their outstanding seasons and their appearances at the 2026 Ohio High School State Track & Field Championships. Their accomplishments remind us that success is not measured only in gold medals, but also in dedication, courage, perseverance, and the willingness to compete on the biggest stage available.
