Boys Basketball Season Ends with District Final Loss to Garfield Heights

The postseason run for the Brush Arcs boys basketball team came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Garfield Heights Bulldogs used a fast start and the scoring brilliance of All-State guard Marcus Johnson to secure a 70–59 victory in an OHSAA playoff matchup at Cloverleaf High School in Seville.

Johnson, a University of South Carolina commit, helped Garfield Heights set the tone early. The senior standout scored 7 points in the opening quarter, while four other Bulldogs contributed to the attack, including a three-pointer from King Young, as Garfield Heights surged to an 18–6 lead after the first quarter. The Bulldogs would never trail the rest of the way.

Brush struggled to find an answer for Johnson, who finished with a game-high 29 points, one above his season average, distributing his scoring consistently across all four quarters. Johnson scored 7 points in the first period, 8 in the second, 6 in the third, and 8 more in the fourth, keeping the Bulldogs firmly in control throughout the contest.

The Arcs steadied themselves in the second quarter, matching Garfield Heights point-for-point with 13 points of their own but still trailed 31–19 at halftime. Prince Ryleigh-Johnson sparked the Brush offense with six points, while Jayvion Sanderson connected on a long three-pointer. Jay Gilchrist and Khalil Dudley each added two points during the stretch.
Garfield Heights widened the gap in the third quarter, fueled again by Johnson's scoring along with perimeter shooting from Young and Malik Terry. The Bulldogs outscored Brush 19–11 in the period, pushing their advantage to 50–30 heading into the final quarter.

Refusing to let their season end quietly, the Arcs battled hard over the final eight minutes. Point guard Khalil Dudley, who finished with 15 points, and Prince Ryleigh-Johnson, who scored eight of his team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, helped Brush produce a 29–19 scoring edge in the final stanza. The late rally trimmed the deficit but ultimately left the Arcs short as Garfield Heights closed out the 70–59 victory.

Johnson led all scorers with 29 points, while King Young added 13 points, including three three-pointers. Three additional Bulldogs chipped in six points each. At the foul line, Garfield Heights converted 14 of 23 free throws, while Brush was efficient, hitting 9 of 11 attempts.

Along with Dudley's 15 points and Ryleigh-Johnson's 21, Reginald Smith Jr. contributed six points, nine rebounds, and two blocks, providing strong interior play for the Arcs.
Brush entered the contest having won nine of its previous eleven games, but ultimately ran into a very formidable Garfield Heights squad. The Arcs fought hard until the final buzzer, closing their season with a 17–9 record.

The team will say goodbye to seniors Jay Gilchrist and Prince Ryleigh-Johnson, among others, but the future remains promising for Head Coach Chet Mason's program. With seven key contributors expected to return next season, and Mason's proven eye for emerging talent, the Arcs appear well positioned to continue building toward future postseason success.
