When two of Ohio's elite programs collide in February, the atmosphere feels a whole lot like March. Wednesday night at Jackson High School delivered exactly that, as the Brush Lady Arcs went on the road and earned a statement-making 54–48 victory over the Massillon Jackson Polar Bears in a game that felt every bit like postseason action.
The matchup featured the No. 4-ranked Division III Lady Arcs squaring off against the No. 6 team in Division I, and it lived up to the billing from the opening tip.
Jackson grabbed a 14–10 edge after the first quarter, but Brush stayed within striking distance behind strong interior work from post player Jakayln Brown, who scored six early points, and four more from
Nylah Mason.
Then the headliners took center stage.
After being held scoreless in the opening quarter, Brush star Tatiana "Tati" Mason flipped the switch, pouring in 21 points over the final three quarters. Not to be outdone, Jackson standout Maddie Lepley answered every challenge, scoring 21 of her game-high 25 points after the first eight minutes to keep the contest razor-tight throughout.
The difference, however, was depth — and family chemistry. Once again, Tati Mason received major support from her sister, as
Nylah Mason delivered a huge performance of her own with 19 points. Together, the Mason duo accounted for 40 of Brush's 54 points and consistently answered Jackson runs. Ashley Helle chipped in nine points for the Polar Bears on three three-pointers, but she was limited down the stretch after fouling out with several minutes remaining. Beyond Lepley and Helle, four other Jackson players were held to six points or fewer as the Lady Arcs' defense locked in late.
Unlike Brush's recent one-point overtime loss to Laurel, free throws were a strength this time around. The Lady Arcs went a crisp 16-for-20 (80%) at the charity stripe, while Jackson finished 7-for-12 (58%). Tati and
Nylah Mason combined to hit 14 of 16 free throws — a textbook example of how games are won in February… and March.
Juliana Ferreira added three points, Addi Harris chipped in two, and Brush calmly closed out the final minutes to secure the 54–48 road win.
The victory was sweet redemption for the Lady Arcs, who had suffered a lopsided 67–26 loss to Jackson in their previous meeting. It also snapped Jackson's 12-game winning streak and ended a 14-game home winning streak dating back to last season.
With the win, Brush improves to 15–5 and has now taken three of its last four games — all while continuing a rugged schedule designed to prepare the team for tournament play. Jackson drops to 16–2.
The Lady Arcs will enjoy a brief break before heading back on the road Monday night to face the North Rangers in Eastlake at 6:45 p.m., then return home to Welser Gym on February 11 to close the regular season against Gilmour Academy @ 7:00pm.
