Brush's boys basketball season came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Arcs fell to the Akron Hoban Knights 63-44 in the Division III district final at the Canton Field House. Despite a valiant effort, the Arcs of Coach
Chet Mason couldn't overcome the balanced attack and stout defense of the Knights, who advanced to the next round with the victory.
Hoban got off to a strong start, building an 18-12 lead after the first quarter, largely due to a fast start from John Johnson, who scored eight points in the opening period. However, Johnson went quiet after the first quarter, and the Arcs looked to capitalize on the shift in momentum. While Hoban's offense slowed in the second quarter, scoring just eight points, the Arcs couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. Brush managed only 10 points in the period, cutting the deficit to 26-22 at the half.
In the second half, Hoban took control with a balanced offensive effort. Sam Greer, who has been a standout performer throughout the tournament, finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Greer also contributed defensively, blocking six shots in his most dominant defensive performance since January.Â
Alongside Greer, Kamran Ensley was a key contributor, shooting 71% from the field to score 12 points, continuing his impressive shooting streak. John Johnson, despite his quiet second quarter, finished with 14 points, while James McCarthy added 13 to round out the Knights' double-figure scorers.
The Arcs were led by the outstanding play of senior
Damari Dammons, who scored a game-high 24 points. However, the lack of scoring support from his teammates proved costly.
Dekhi Owens chipped in with eight points, while
Prince Ryleigh-Johnson added six, but it wasn't enough to close the gap. Despite Brush's strong defensive effort and Dammons' offensive firepower, the Arcs couldn't keep pace with Hoban's balanced attack and stifling defense.
