Lady Arcs Historic Run Comes to an End With State Semifinal Loss

On March 9, in the state semifinal at Canton Memorial Field House, the Avon Lake Shoregals edged out the Brush Lady Arcs, 43-39, in a hard-fought defensive battle that saw both teams fighting tooth and nail. The win ended Brush's 22-game winning streak and secured Avon Lake a spot in the state final.

The game was close throughout, with neither team holding a lead of more than five points. Brush briefly took a 31-30 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Avon Lake responded immediately with a floater from Olivia Tobin to regain the advantage. The Arcs would fight back, taking brief leads of 35-32 and 37-35, but each time, the Shoregals found a way to retake control. With under 4 minutes left, Bree Jones hit a crucial 3-pointer to give Avon Lake a 38-37 lead—one they would never relinquish, ultimately outscoring Brush 5-2 in the final minutes to seal the win.

Defense was key to the Shoregals' success, especially in limiting the impact of Brush's star player, Tatiana Mason. A finalist for Ohio Ms. Basketball, Mason had torched Avon Lake in their previous meeting, but in this game, Olivia Miller hounded her relentlessly. Despite Mason's efforts on the boards, grabbing six offensive rebounds, she struggled to score, finishing with just seven points on 2-of-9 shooting.

Miller, who was also the game's top scorer with 16 points, gave forth a fine defensive effort against Mason.
The Shoregals' ball handlers, Tobin and Izzie Polinko, also stepped up, executing the game plan effectively. Polinko acknowledged the team's improvement since the first Brush meeting. She knew they had to step up big-time from the last meeting between these two teams - and they did.

In addition to Miller's 16 points, Avon Lake received eight points from Molly Milligan (all in the first half) and nine from Tobin (all in the second half). Brush, which had four underclassmen in its starting lineup, was led by freshman guard Nyla Mason with 10 points. Tatiana Mason and Chaniyra McDowell-Isaacs both scored seven, while Keyarra Shields contributed six.  The Lady Arcs finish a remarkable season at 24-3 and return most of its key starters for next year !
