As Brush High School approaches its monumental 100th anniversary in 2027, it's a rare occasion to witness "firsts" at such an established institution. But, just two years shy of this impressive milestone, Brush continues to produce game-changers who are pushing boundaries, and in the case of Keyarra "Moo" Shields and Shianne Lipscomb, it's the world of Flag Football that is witnessing some historic breakthroughs.
These two extraordinary seniors have made history as the first-ever Brush Arcs to receive scholarship offers for their exceptional talent in Flag Football – a sport that has quickly gained traction and prominence under the watchful eye of Head Coach
Jerome Jackson and Assistant Coach Jennifer Chatman. Their commitment and skill development have transformed Brush's Flag Football program into a force to be reckoned with.
Both Shields and Lipscomb have become cornerstone players on the team, demonstrating their leadership and athleticism. Their talents have taken them beyond the confines of local fields, where they've had the opportunity to showcase their skills in high-profile events, including a memorable appearance at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton during halftime of an NFL game, as well as competing at Cleveland Browns Stadium during a Northeast Ohio tournament.
For Shields, the recognition has only grown. Last fall, her skills earned her a coveted spot on a national All-Star team, and in January, she found herself in Orlando, FL, where she displayed her abilities alongside the nation's best. For both young women, these experiences have been eye-opening and have shown them just how far their hard work can take them.
In addition to their prowess on the flag football field, both Shields and Lipscomb are standout multi-sport athletes. Lipscomb, a dynamic force, also shines in basketball and track and field, contributing significantly to her teams. Shields is a key member of the basketball squad, often a starter, and has played a vital role in helping the team to an impressive 19-2 record as they gear up for the first round of playoffs this weekend.
The beauty of athletics, however, extends far beyond just the thrill of competition, victories, or even records. It's about the opportunities that come with it, the doors that are opened to higher education, and the endless possibilities that await these young women. Thanks to their athletic achievements, Keyarra and Shianne have secured opportunities to continue their education and athletic pursuits at the collegiate level.
In the heart of Lyndhurst, these two incredible student-athletes have not only made history but have also paved the way for others to follow. Their journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, teamwork, and dedication – and as Brush High School heads towards its 100-year milestone, there's no doubt that these trailblazers will inspire generations to come.
CONGRATULATIONS, LADIES! The future is bright, and the world is at your feet.
