The Brush boys soccer team shrugged off an early 1-0 deficit to register two goals in both the first and second halves as they collected a 4-1 victory in their first round sectional playoff game against Streetsboro.
Brush, entering action at 11-4-2, was the higher seed coming in - but the Rockets gave the Arcs something to ponder when, in the opening stages of the game, sophomore Logan Sadowski snuck a shot past Arc Goalkeep Dom Taylor, very much like a stone wall during the season - allowing just 1.06 goals against overall and a meager 0.64 goals against on the Korb Field turf during the prior 17 matches. That tally surprised the Arcs and their home crowd early on, until junior forward
Luis Barrientos scored the equalizer some 14 minutes into the initial 40 minutes. At 1-1, Korb Field breathed easier, and the Arcs tightened their defense noticeably. Taylor showed that he understood this to be a "win or go home" opportunity - and as a senior - he was not ready to play his last high school soccer encounter.
Nor were his supporting cast, comprised of fullbacks
Ryan Stovall,
Geofferson Betts,
Roberto Washington &
Josue Melgar - who assisted in keeping Streetsboro off the scoreboard for the last 65+ minutes of the contest by deterring numerous offensive thrusts by the Rockets. The Arcs then relied behind the 1-2 "sniper duo" of
Stephen Forges and
Noah Boyd to accomplish what they do best - score goals that discourage and demoralize opposing Goalkeeps. Forges banged one home in the 22nd minute of the 1st to give Brush a 2-1 lead they would not give back - and when Forges and Boyd tallied in the 30th and 35th minutes of half #2, respectively, all was good in ARC NATION. Coach Dimatteo was able to use his bench a bit in the second stanza, not only giving the starters a breather, but it allowed numerous players the opportunity to understand that playoff competition is different than regular season reps.
