In a thrilling boys' basketball game, Maple Heights defeated No. 23 Brush 59-56 in a hard-fought battle. The game was marked by multiple lead changes and ties, making it an intense back-and-forth affair.
Brush (now 8-5) was led by senior guard
Damari Dammons, who put up a strong performance with 20 points and 5 rebounds.
Khalil Dudley added 12 points, including three 3-pointers, bringing his total to nine 3-pointers in the last two games. Jalani Carr made a notable contribution off the bench with 10 points and 3 rebounds.
For Maple Heights (currently 5-8), senior guard Andre McCollough scored a game-high 22 points, contributing both with outside shooting and aggressive drives to the basket. Kalin Allen also had a solid outing with 11 points, while 6'8" Dava'n Aniton was a dominant force in the paint, registering 12 points, over 10 rebounds, and numerous altered shots, helping disrupt Brush's offense.
The Mustangs were a bit sharper in their shooting on the night, knocking down 52% from the field to the Arcs 47% overall, but Brush made 4 of 14 three-pointers to the Mustang output of 1 for 13 from long range. Neither team helped their cause from the free throw stripe, with Brush holding a 47% to 40% edge from there. The turnovers were a wash -Â 13 for each team - yet the Mustang defense gave the Arcs difficulty with a 9-5 edge in steals and a 5-1 advantage in blocked shots (many attributed to Aniton).
It was a closely contested game, but the Mustangs' steady play, particularly from McCollough and Aniton, allowed them to pull off the road victory.
