The Brush Lady Arcs soccer team's season ended Monday night with a hard fought 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Longhorns of Lutheran West.
For the first half, the Goalkeeps were on center stage, with Arc
Mackenzi Griffin and Longhorn Olivia Grace (both underclassmen) registering save after save and denying the opponent any opportunity to take the upper hand. Both defenses were menacing, as breakaways and offensive strategies were thwarted time after time. The Arcs were without junior sweeper
Sophia Rondini due to illness and senior Goalkeep
Bernadette Seddon (season-long injury) – yet senior captain
Dawnelle Blake,
Elizabeth Cifuentes,
Reagan Shelby and
Kiah Ekechukwu kept the pressure on Griffin to a minimum. The Lutheran West defense was equally strong, keeping the "fearsome threesome" of
Brianna Reed,
Emmie Farren, and senior captain
Lorah Farren (more on them below) from mounting any serious threats for Goalkeep Grace.
The second 40 minutes was much the same as the first was, with very few shots on goal of any significance – though clearly – there were times it felt as if 85% of the time the ball was contained by Lutheran West in the Brush scoring zone. Griffin and company had a lot of goal denials to issue in half number 2 that can tend to wear on a team in the latter stages of play. And that perspective proved true when, with just 3:39 left in the game, Longhorn Mayce Fowler ripped the nets with the only goal that would be scored on this night. Brush took a furious last-minute run at tying the game and forcing overtime – but they just could not catch Goalkeep Grace off-guard enough to continue their season. The Lady Arcs finish 2024 with a very commendable record of 9 wins / 5 losses / 4 ties – and the respect of every opponent they kicked off against this Fall.
